Revised plans for the space surrounding the Jubilee monument in Pocklington Market Place have been released, following public engagement earlier this year.
The scheme aims to deliver a small public square and more flexible event space. It will provide additional pedestrian and seating space in the town centre, with new paving, benches, trees and planting.
The scheme will be funded through the Rural England Prosperity Fund, part of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The fund is designed to support new and improved community infrastructure in rural areas, such as in Pocklington.
Vehicle access to businesses and St Peter’s Square will be maintained, and the design incorporates the flexibility to support the weekly market and town centre events.
The design, assisted by public consultation, has also considered pedestrian safety, height restrictions, visibility for vehicles, and the use of compliant materials within the conservation area.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council invited views on a proposal to create the public space in this area between March and May this year. It received a mix of online and paper responses, with overall support for the scheme. There was also support for a trial for a maximum stay period on West Green car park.
Due to feedback received, the scheme will now be more open and connected to the wider Market Place area, supported by improved pavements and crossing points.
This scheme complements other projects recently completed in the town centre funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, including free public wi-fi and accessibility improvements within Pocklington Arts Centre.
The works should be completed by spring 2025, with carriageway resurfacing to be undertaken during the evenings to minimise disruption. These works represent a combined investment of over £700,000 in the town.
As part of the statutory process, East Riding of Yorkshire Council will formally consult on a proposed Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) required for the scheme, which involves minor parking re-arrangements in Market Place and a potential maximum stay period on West Green car park.
Pocklington Town Council supported the proposed plans at a Full Council meeting in July 2024 following consideration of public feedback and a range of design options.
Councillor Gary McMaster, Cabinet Member for Housing and Infrastructure, said, “We’re looking forward to undertaking this bold renewal of Pocklington town centre. The new square will provide a new public space for families, visitors, and shoppers.
We have listened to public views and worked extensively with Pocklington Town Council and local ward councillors to develop the design for this scheme.”
Mayor Roly Cronshaw, Pocklington Town Council said, “Pocklington Town Council are pleased to see this investment in Pocklington. The pedestrian area will transform the town centre, making it safer and more accessible for our community and visitors alike.
“Plus, our local traders will benefit from people staying longer in this attractive new public space”.
