East Riding Council works with Yorkshire Water to help struggling families with lower water rates

East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s revenues and benefits service have worked with Yorkshire Water to identify families who are eligible for a lower capped water meter tariff.

Households on an income-based benefit, with three or more children, who use more water than an average household, may be eligible for Yorkshire Water’s ‘WaterSure’ tariff.

Following a data protection impact assessment, East Riding Council shared data with Yorkshire Water to apply this lower cost tariff to eligible East Riding households. These households automatically received the tariff without them needing to apply for it.

More than 200 households in the county have benefited from this initiative, with an average saving of £393 a year from their water bill.

Councillor Nigel Wilkinson, Cabinet Member for Finance and Governance said “This is a great initiative to help families who may be struggling with the cost of living.

I encourage those anxious about their finances to also visit the East Riding’s help for households page, which details further advice and support available.”
