Commuted Sums help Blackburn Leisure Bowls Club

Blackburn Leisure Bowls Club have officially opened their new club room having been awarded £15,536 from East Riding of Yorkshire Council as part of Commuted Sums.

The total project cost was £17,262 with the club adding £1,726 from their own funds and in-kind work.

Blackburn Leisure Bowls Club are a 90-year-old independent outdoor bowls club based at Blackburn Leisure Sports Ground which provides the local community with social bowling as well as league fixtures outside during the spring and summer months. They have a paid membership of 20 with additional social bowlers. The team play fixtures in several leagues all over East Riding, providing competitive bowls for players all over the region.

Blackburn Leisure Bowls have installed the new club room which is equipped with electricity and contains a kitchen and toilet facilities.

Mike Perkins, Blackburn Leisure Bowls Club Chairman, said “‘The clubhouse is looking great and already proving an asset to the club and receives many admiring comments from visiting clubs and spectators.”

Councillor Gary McMaster, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s cabinet member for planning, housing and infrastructure added “The upgrades to the historic Blackburn Leisure Bowls Club thanks to the award of Commuted Sums will help members enjoy the social element that comes with bowls. I wish the club all the success for the next 90 years.”
