Work has begun on a new affordable housing project on Burden Road in Beverley, by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

The development will comprise of four council houses, two with two bedrooms and two with three bedrooms.

Planning approval was granted in February 2023, with local builder Geo. Houlton & Sons appointed as the contractor in April 2024.

The homes are designed to a high standard to meet the community’s housing needs, says the council. Energy efficiency is a key aspect of the project, with each house equipped with air-source heat pumps and roof-mounted solar panels.

The pilot scheme will also use technology to monitor and evaluate energy usage and cost savings for tenants, informing designs for future council houses.

Work commenced in April, funded by the council’s housing revenue account resources and a Homes England grant, a government body supporting the supply of affordable housing.

The development is set to be finished by early 2025, with new tenants expected to start moving in soon after the completion. The allocation of council houses will be conducted according to the council’s housing allocations policy.

Portfolio holder for planning, housing and infrastructure, Councillor Gary McMaster, commented: “It’s great to deliver new affordable housing in Beverley, as well as support local training and jobs. I’m delighted that this scheme will pioneer new energy efficiency measures and look forward to seeing these houses take shape.”
