Weekend Review: 12th September 2022

The local sport was reduced in schedule following the postponement of all football this weekend.

Beverley RUFC made it two wins from two at the start of their new season. The Beavers won away at Wetherby on the opening day and followed it up with a win away to Bradford Salem on Saturday afternoon. Captain Rob Smith was on target with three penalties as well as converting his own try. Jake Boardman once again crossed for a try.

• Bradford Salem 14-21 Beverley

Driffield Town CC were defeated in the semi-finals of the Yorkshire Premier Leagues Play-Offs by Woodlands CC. The Bradford League team won the toss and chose to bat first. The opening partnership wracked up 170 without loss, Sam Frankland reached an excellent 101 from 118 balls, whilst his partner Tim Jackson produced 76. Driffield fought back, James Anson and Jordan Caley showed resistance. Anson 3-41 from 15 overs, Caley was expensive but took four wickets. Without the spinner, Mishra, Town struggled as the hosts reached 284/7 from 50 overs.

Driffield’s response was steady early on. The opening stand made 44, with, in form, Alec Drury managing 46. George Drury and Noah Kelly clocked up 23 and 21 respectively but the rest of the batting line-up struggled to prevent the fast tumbling wickets. The Woldsmen only made 169 before being bowled all out in 42.5 overs. Despite a disappointing 115-run defeat, it has been a successful season for Driffield. Woodlands CC progressed to a final with Appleby Froddingham.

• FR: Seahawks complete pre-season Cup

Hull Seahawks suffered defeats in their final pre-season games. Leeds Knights were winners 8-1 at Hull Ice Arena on Saturday. The Seahawks showed more fight on Sunday with a 4-2 loss away at Sheffield Steeldogs. The four Yorkshire Cup games will have given the new Hull team plenty to think about ahead of the new season starting next week.

• Seven KR Academy Graduates Awarded First Pro Deals

Hull KR announced seven academy players signed professional contracts with the club. Connor Barley, Darnell Byas, Harvey Moore, Harvey Reynolds, Jack Potter and Leo Tennison all will join Willie Peters’ first-team squad next year. Connor Barley and Harvey Moore have already featured in the first-team squad this season. Barley scored a try on his debut away at St Helens.
