BEVERLEY railway station’s iconic wooden footbridge will be closed on Friday until further notice ahead of refurbishment work. The Grade II-listed bridge was the subject of controversial plans to remove the wooden canopy, with objectors, including Beverley Civic Society, calling for more sympathetic repairs.

Network Rail says because the wooden structure is rotting it needs to close the bridge on safety grounds, including the risk of pieces of the bridge falling on to the track. The work is due to be completed in 2023 and until then access between the station’s two platforms will be via the level crossing on Armstrong Way.

A spokesperson said passengers should speak to station staff if they need any help and allow extra time for switching platforms.

TRANSPORT charity Beverley Community Lift is appealing for more volunteer drivers to help maintain their service helping elderly or disabled people get to medical and social appointments as well as shopping trips. Those interested can either use their own car or one of the charity’s minibuses. To find out more call 01482 868082, weekday mornings, or visit www.bclift.org.uk

BEVERLEY MP Graham Stuart last night congratulated Liz Truss on becoming the new Leader of the Conservative Party and the country’s new Prime Minister.
