A 49-YEAR-OLD Leeds man successfully completed the London Marathon in memory of a well-known Beverley businessman and his daughter, both of whom died of Covid just days apart. David Whincup and his daughter, Joanne Renninson, were directors of the Educare Nursery in Beverley and well known for their work across a variety of sectors around the region.

David and Joanne’s family were present at Sunday’s Marathon to cheer on Richard Smith, David’s nephew and Joanne’s cousin, who is raising money for the MS Society – Joanne had lived with Multiple Sclerosis for more than 20 years. In April 2020 both Joanne and her dad were admitted to hospital with Covid. Joanne’s MS meant she couldn’t fight the virus and David had an underlying heart condition. Tragically the father and daughter died within days of each other.

Richard told us: “As the funerals were held in the peak of the first Covid lockdown we could not come together as a family to support each other and instead we were left with phone calls and zooms – having to watch both funerals via web link three days apart. It’s been tough for our family but the marathon day was simply amazing. It was a day I’ll never forget.”

LATEST DATA from the Office for National Statistics suggest Covid-19 is continuing to spread, consistent across all age groups and variants, with nationally, one in 65 people infected. Yorkshire and the Humber was one of the areas identified where infections are increasing

A REMINDER that there will be no rail services from Beverley at all tomorrow because of the ongoing industrial action.
