HUMBERSIDE Police says there has been a decrease in crime across the region at a time when there has been an increase nationally. According to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics for the period to December 2021, crime has decreased by 2.2% against a national average increase of 6.5%.

Looking at the figures in detail, sexual offences dropped by 2.9% against an average increase of 21.7% nationally and drug offences in the region dropped by 3.1%. Theft offences decreased by 14% across the board, even though thefts from a person increased by 4.8%. Burglary was down by 24.6%, vehicle offences down by 20.2% and shoplifting down by 15.8%.

MORE THAN 100 East Riding households have offered to host Ukrainian refugees, according to latest council figures. East Riding Council has also said that at least 35 refugees have already been helped locally, based on the amount of welcome payments given, although the actual figure could be higher. Councillors heard in March that County Hall officials had received hundreds of emails offering accommodation.

CUPPA and a chorus sessions have returned to East Riding libraries, including Beverley, in a bid to ease people’s feelings of social isolation. They are led by fully-trained choirmasters or qualified singing professionals and there is no need for participants to read music or have any experience of singing.

The sessions take place at Beverley Library on the first and third Thursday of every month, between 9.30 and 11am and include a relaxed “getting to know you” social between the facilitator and those taking part, with a drink and light refreshments. Song requests are welcome.
