Children from Beverley Minster Primary School will be taking part in a major tree planting exercise on Thursday to mark the relaunch of the Humber Forest initiative. A total of 1,225 trees will be planted on the Archery Field in Central Avenue, Beverley, watched by the Lord Lieutenant of the East Riding, Jim Dick, and the chairman of East Riding Council, Cllr Nigel Wilkinson.

The Humber Forest, previously known as HEYwoods, is the community forest for Hull & East Yorkshire and is actually a collection of trees, woodlands and hedgerows across the area. In the current planting season a total of 72,320 trees will be planted on a total of 48 sites.

A new exhibition, “Birds, Books and Belfries”, has opened at the Treasure House in Beverley, exploring the remarkable life of a 19th century East Riding vicar who, alongside his role as vicar of Nafferton and later Nunburnholme, studied nature, wrote books and campaigned for wildlife. 

The exhibition centres on the beautiful natural history books held in East Riding Archives, which were written by the Rev Francis Orpen Morris, and also includes a stunning film about the bird colonies at RSPB Bempton Cliffs, showing the habitats which Morris was passionate about protecting. The exhibition will run until September 24.

And finally, as part of the wider Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations Woodmansey Parish Council has bought two commemorative benches  and is now inviting suggestions from residents on where they should be sited.
