INSTANCES of anti-social behaviour affecting residents in the St Nicholas Road area of Beverley have decreased since extra police patrols were introduced, a meeting chaired by Beverley MP Graham Stuart has been told. It was the second time representatives of the local Neighbourhood Watch had met with ward councillors and representatives of East Riding Council and the police.

Mr Stuart told Beverley FM the reduction has been attributed to residents reporting incidents to the police and extra police patrols. “I know many residents have been concerned about anti-social behaviour and I am pleased that there has been a significant reduction,” he said. “It seems the hard work has paid off. The Ward Councillors have assured me they are going to keep up the pressure to make sure things don’t go backwards.”

A CHESS festival is being held at Flemingate today, organised by the Hull & District Chess Association, as a way of getting people of all ages, but particularly youngsters, interested in playing the game. A giant chess set is being set up between 10am and 3.30pm and the event is open to everyone to have a go, playing against family or friends. There’s also a special challenge event with one of the area’s strongest players taking on all-comers, all at the same time.

YOU CAN have your chips and eat them in peace tomorrow if you head to Scarborough beach, where a mobile seagull deterrent crew will be in action. The “Chipwatch” team will be armed with reflective umbrellas, decoy hawks and a unique new seagull distracting soundtrack called “Bye Gull Bye”, which features sounds of Hawk and Falcon calls.

Beachgoers and holidaymakers can enter the “Chipwatch” zones on a first-come-first-served basis and enjoy their fish and chips and other foods in peace, without the threat of their meal being pecked and pinched. Dr Madeleine Goumas, gull expert from the University of Exeter said: “This is a great initiative to help the public enjoy their summer holidays without the threat of unwanted birds, all whilst not being harmful to them.
