Beverley has been ranked above York as a centre for shopping, according to an influential report by the strategic retail property consultancy Harper Dennis Hobbs. Analysing data from 1,000 retail locations, Beverley was placed fourth in the Yorkshire and Humber region, behind Skipton, Ilkley and Harrogate but, significantly, ahead of York. Nationally, Beverley was rated the 17th best retail centre (York was 18th), which was an improvement of two places compared to the 2021 report.

Looking at the results, the report stated: “Some of the smaller, more affluent locations have increased their standing as they have maintained low vacancy rates. Others have benefited from the continuing work from home recommendation from the Government, whilst domestic tourism has also helped to increase visits to retail properties in historic centres to a greater extent than in comparable locations.”
