THE VOLUNTEER community gardening group, Beverley In Bloom, who work in partnership with Beverley Town Council to brighten up the town with plants and flowers, has appealed for new members to help with their efforts.

The group held a promotional and fund-raising morning at the town’s Tesco store, raising £125 in the process and recruiting two new members. The group’s chair Linda Freeman said they would love to hear from anyone who could spare some time to help. She can be contacted on 01482 862275.

A BADLY-ERODED plaque on St Mary’s Church in Beverley commemorating a turbulent period in British history, is to be replaced in a ceremony next month, attended by members of Beverley Civic Society and the Friends of St Mary’s.

The plaque tells the tragic story of two Danish soldiers who were among a contingent of several thousand to arrive in Hull on their way to fight in Ireland on behalf of King William III. However a quarrel between the two men broke out, resulting in a dual, in which one of them was killed. 

According to Danish Articles of War, duelling was forbidden and carried a death sentence, with the other man subsequently being beheaded in Beverley market. The people of Beverley were deeply touched by the events and decided that both soldiers should be buried side by side at St Mary’s and a plaque was subsequently placed on the south side of the church, paid for by the chief Danish cavalry officer. The new replacement plaque will be unveiled on Sunday October 23.
