Hull KR activate extension for Wood

Hull KR can confirm the club have activated the one-year extension in Sam Wood’s contract for the 2023 season.

The towering centre has been one of the Robins’ strong performers going from strength to strength in 2022. Equally dangerous on the wing and at centre, Wood has become integral to the Robins’ right edge, scoring a barnstorming brace in the side’s 26-10 win over Castleford in Round 4 and provided the vital assist to send Lachlan Coote over for his first try in the Hull Derby.

The 24-year-old is delighted to extend his stay in East Hull into 2023: “It’s great that the club have made the decision to extend the deal early. I’m really grateful that they’re showing some faith in me for next year. I can’t wait to crack on once I’m back from injury and help the boys.

“After a couple of games, I really found my feet and was probably playing some of the best rugby I’ve played.”

Currently sidelined with a dislocated patella sustained in the loss to Leeds, Wood is aiming to return in June and is hopeful the Robins will be better for the upcoming break in fixtures:“We’ve got a bit of a break next week and a refresh. Hopefully, we can go again and have a really strong finish to the year.”

Since moving to Hull, Wood has loved life so far in East Yorkshire putting the ease of the move down to the club and the passionate, Red Army: “The fans have been absolutely fantastic. You run out at a derby to ten thousand fans and you can feel the ground shaking! It’s unlike anything I’ve experienced.

“I’m loving my time over here and I can’t wait to be here next year too. It’s been made seamless by the club and an easy transition.”
