TWO FORMER students who completed diplomas in professional and advanced professional cookery at East Riding College in Beverley are currently working with top chef Chris Emery at the newly-refurbished Randolph Hotel in Oxford. Jake and Zach Shaw were recommended by the college’s curriculum leader in catering and hospitality, David Leaf.

The five-star hotel opened last autumn after a £6 million refit and appointed Mr Emery, former executive sous chef at Jason Atherton’s Michelin-starred Pollen Street Social in London and head chef at the Clocktower in New York, to oversee its restaurant. 

David Leaf visited the hotel to see how his former pupils were getting on. He told us: “Chris had nothing but praise for them both, their excellent work ethic and willingness to learn and how quickly both had become important, integral parts of the team.” 

THERE’S A CHANCE to find out more about the latest exhibition at Beverley Art Gallery with a couple of new events, including one tomorrow. The exhibition is called “Crossing borders from the Danube to the Humber: Alfred Gruber and Friends” and in Saturday’s talk art historian Dr Gerardine Mulcahy-Parker reveals how she unearthed the story of the Austrian-born sculptor and his European artistic circle during the 1960s and beyond. 

It also offers an opportunity to see original drawings, sculptural models, tools and materials at close range, and discover just what made this extraordinary artist tick. The talk takes place from 1.30pm – 2.30pm in the Education Room on the first floor of the Treasure House. Limited tickets are also available from Beverley Art Gallery at the Treasure House.

And on Wednesday June 1, visitors can also attend a lunchtime tour with Dr Mulcahy-Parker to discover more about the exhibition. The lunchtime tour will take place on Wednesday, 1 June from 12.30pm-1.00pm at Beverley Art Gallery on the first floor of the Treasure House. It is free and no booking is required.
