Cardiff City 2-3 Hull City

Liam Rosenior earned his first win as Hull City’s head coach as Regan Slater’s quick-fire double secured a topsy-turvy victory at Cardiff City.

Dimitrios Pelkas gave the visitors a fourth-minute lead but goals from Callum Robinson and ex-Tiger Gavin Whyte early in the second half turned the match on its head. Slater’s low drive restored parity and the midfielder struck again two minutes later to clinch the three points and lift City two places up the Championship standings to 19th.

Greg Docherty was recalled to the side in place of the suspended Óscar Estupiñán as Rosenior made one change from the goalless draw at Millwall, with Ryan Longman deployed up front.

The Tigers had taken seven points from the previous nine available on the road and made the perfect start in South Wales, notching our earliest goal of the season after four minutes.

Jacob Greaves, continuing in his new left-back role, swung in a sumptuous cross which eluded Longman in the middle but was tapped in by Pelkas at the back post from six yards.

Rosenior’s philosophy of playing out from the back was in full effect, although there were teething issues as Cardiff pressed intently, with his players still getting accustomed to his methods. After Ryan Woods was caught in possession midway inside his own half, Joe Ralls lined up a left-footed shot from 20 yards which whistled just wide of the far upright.

The visitors secured a league double over the Bluebirds last season and had two big chances to go further ahead within the space of 60 seconds around the 20-minute mark. First, Pelkas profited on a loose pass before feeding Docherty, whose driven strike took a deflection off Curtis Nelson and required the fingertips of goalkeeper Ryan Allsopp to flick the ball over. Cyrus Christie then delivered a pinpoint cross from the right which was met by the head of Longman but he glanced wide from inside the six-yard box.
