It was due to be another busy weekend of local sport. However, due to the sad passing of Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II all football fixtures are being postponed this weekend. Beverley Town, Beverley Town Ladies, North Ferriby, Cherry Burton, Great Driffield AFC, Hull City, Hull City Ladies and East Riding Futsal Club are all affected and their games will be played at a later date.

Hull FC announced this morning the appointment of a new head coach. Tony Smith joins the Black and Whites following the departure of Brett Hodgson at the conclusion of the 2022 season. Smith will aim to improve on the 9th-placed finish last season. This will add further spice to derby day between Hull FC and Hull KR, Smith was the Robins Head Coach during the first half of this season.

Hull Seahawks announced a new signing on Thursday night. Lee Pollitt joins the Hull outfit ahead of the final round of pre-season cup fixtures. Matty Davies’ side lost both games last week but showed encouraging signs, especially in the close defeat to Leeds Knights. The Knights will visit Hull Ice Arena this evening, and tomorrow the Seahawks will travel to Sheffield Steeldogs.

Beverley RUFC will hope to build on an excellent start to the season away at Bradford Salem this afternoon. The Beavers were victors on the opening day against Wetherby.

Driffield Town CC enter the Yorkshire Premier Leagues Play-Offs today. This follows their championship-winning season. Town will take on Woodlands CC away from home. Woodlands won the infamous Bradford League.

The statement from the FA which saw the postponements of all football this weekend:

“Her Majesty the Queen was a long-standing Patron of The Football Association and has left a lasting and indelible legacy on our national game.

As a mark of respect, following the passing of Her Majesty the Queen, English football has united to postpone all football fixtures between 9-11 September.

The FA can confirm that all football fixtures across the Barclays Women’s Super League, Barclays Women’s Championship, the Vitality Women’s FA Cup, and the Isuzu FA Trophy, will be postponed this weekend.

We can also confirm that all football fixtures across the National League System [NLS], Steps 1-6, including the Vanarama National Leagues, the Women’s Football Pyramid [WFP], Tiers 3-7, and matches across grassroots football in England will be postponed.

The Premier League and the EFL have all confirmed that their fixtures this weekend will be rescheduled for a later date.

All flags at Wembley Stadium and St. George’s Park will continue to fly at half-mast over the weekend.

Our thoughts remain with our president, HRH The Duke of Cambridge, and the whole of the Royal Family during this time.”
