Hull KR’s Lewis gave an emotional interview that showed why May wants to ‘look after’ his team-mate. Hull Kingston Rovers half-back Mikey Lewis showed his human side again after reaching the Grand Final – in an interview that was a reminder of the pride he showed when representing England – and it highlighted the Hull-born player’s passion for the club.

Lewis’ half-back partner Tyrone May had given a fascinating interview in the build-up to the semi-final win over Warrington Wolves, in which May said that “I wanted to strangle him when we played him and I think a lot of clubs do feel that way, but when you play alongside him, he’s pretty electric, he’s just someone you want to put your arm around and look after.”

And, despite being a figure that can attract anger from opposition fans with some of his antics, Lewis opened up in an emotional interview with Sky Sports. Asked about his club, fans and team mates, Lewis said: “I love them all. When I was 16, I joined this club and it wasn’t in a good place and it’s gone to where it is now. It’s credit to everyone behind the scenes taking it to where it is today. I love this team. What we have created this year is spectacular. And we haven’t finished yet. We’ve got one more game. It wasn’t the best performance from us but it’s rugby league isn’t it?

“I can’t wait. I’m just going to take it all in, the full week. It’s something that we dream of as kids, to reach certain things. I’m not just going to go there to just take part. We are going there to win it. We’ve just got to play better but it’s alright.

“Willie (Peters, head coach) keeps us all accountable. He keeps driving us and driving us. It’s a long year, sore bodies. But the grit and determination of our squad is something that we are holding on to very tightly. And it’s not just Willie. There’s (assistant coaches) Danny Ward, there’s Frogga (Brett Delaney), there’s Hodgy (David Hodgson), there’s loads of them. To keep us fit and healthy, all the strength and conditioning coaches are doing it as well. We are all together as one group and we’ll go there and enjoy next week.”
