Hull and parts of East Yorkshire are under a yellow weather warning for ice and snow overnight and tomorrow.

The Met Office has placed huge parts of the UK under a yellow weather warning from 6pm today until 12pm on Wednesday. “Snow and ice may lead to difficult travelling conditions on Tuesday evening, overnight and during Wednesday morning,” it said.

People should expect longer journeys due to the weather conditions, including on roads, railways, and bus services. There will likely be icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

The weather service said to beware of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces and advised that “short term loss of power and other services is likely”.

It added: “Snow showers will develop during Tuesday evening and continue overnight into Wednesday morning, initially in the north of the area before spreading south later in the night. The showers may heavy at times and accompanied by lightning.

“Some lying snow is likely with 2-3 cm in places and a risk of 10 cm or more over higher ground. Ice will readily form on untreated surfaces.”

It said driving conditions could be dangerous and advised allowing at least five minutes longer than usual for journeys and to check for road closures or delays to public transport and amend plans if necessary.

It will feel uncomfortably cold overnight, with a “feels like” temperature of -6C but the actual temperature is not expected to drop below freezing. Wednesday will be sunny but with a maximum temperature of 3C at 1pm and a “feels like” temperature of -2, dipping down again overnight.
