Beverley Golf Club Captain Pat Howdle is gearing up for an epic challenge this week to raise money for charity. Along with three fellow club members he plays to complete 72 holes of golf and 60 miles by bike in one day. And to add a little spice to the challenge they’ll be competing against a rival quartet from Hornsea Golf Club to see who can do it the quickest.

The momentous effort is being carried out in support of the mental health charity Space2B Heard, Pat’c chosen charity for his year as club Captain.

Along with Matt Sutcliffe, Doug Sharp and Carl Johnson, he will be teeing off on The Westwood at 5am this Friday. Then, after completing the 18 holes they’ll be getting on their bikes to cycle to Hornsea where they’ll complete a round of golf there; then cycling back to Beverley before doing it all again.

A team from Hornsea Golf Club, led by former Beverley professional Rich Pace, will undertake the same challenge in the opposite direction. Having set a target of £500, Pat and his fellow golfers have already raised £1,211 via a Just Giving page and hope to boost that total even more by the end of this week.

THOUSANDS of flowers will fill Beverley Minster from this Friday for a special Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Flower Festival. Thirty-five floral designers from flower clubs across East Yorkshire have been invited to take part, while children from four local primary schools will contribute their own artwork.

Organiser Kevin Hara told Beverley FM: “As visitors walk through the West Door, I’m aiming for a total wow factor. There will be floral arrangements throughout the church, in the nave and the side aisles. Even the high altar will be awash with flowers. It’s going to be breath-taking.” The festival runs from Friday until Monday July 4, with tickets cost £6. A special preview evening is being held this Thursday, with limited tickets available, costing £12. More details from www.beverleyminster.org.uk
