BEVERLEY councillors have re-elected Cllr Linda Johnson as Mayor for a second term, with Cllr Tom Astell continuing as Deputy Mayor. The decision was ratified at last night’s annual meeting of the Town Council, when it was felt pandemic restrictions had severely restricted the normal role of the town’s Mayor during her year in office. Her husband, Cllr Graham Johnson, will continue as Mayor’s Consort.

Cllr Johnson, a Liberal Democrat who also sits on East Riding Council, became Beverley’s 418th Mayor and only the 13th woman to hold the office when she was elected in May 2021. Cllr Astell was previously Mayor of Beverley for the year 2020/21, when he was the youngest Mayor in the town’s history.

WOMEN’S walking football for the Over 50s is coming to Beverley Leisure Centre, starting on Tuesday next week, May 17th. There will be a total of 10 sessions; the first is free; thereafter they will cost £2.80 per session.

East Riding Cllr Mike Medini, portfolio holder for cultural and leisure assets, told Beverley FM: “Being active is good for physical and mental health, whatever your age; however, since the pandemic, older people’s activity levels have declined.”

EAST RIDING Council is seeking new foster carers with a series of events during Foster Care Fortnight, which got underway yesterday. There is currently an urgent need for more people to come forward to help care for children and especially teenagers. A drop-in event for people to find out more will be held in Toll Gavel Church Hall this Saturday, between 10am and 12.30pm.
