How farmers can adapt to climate change and the challenges posed by new subsidy regimes and the carbon-neutral agenda will be the subject of a major seminar at Bishop Burton College later this month. An open invitation has gone out to farmers to attend the free event and college principal Bill Meredith told Beverley FM: “The sector is at a turning point, with a necessity to operate more efficiently whilst also addressing the critical challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”

He continued: “We pride ourselves on leading by example and have set ourselves an ambitious target to make our farm carbon net zero by 2030.” The event, on Tuesday April 26, will see a range of speakers, including Brian Richardson, Head of Agriculture at Virgin Money, who told us: “Farmers are still reeling from the effects of Brexit, the pandemic, and now with the change in emphasis with regards to Government subsidies, we at Virgin Money are doing all we can to ensure that the agriculture sector adapts and thrives in this new environment.”

Meanwhile, police are warning farmers to be on their guard following a spate of high-tech thefts, with farm vehicle tracker GPS systems being targeted. In recent thefts, at Goodmanham and at Wressle, near Howden, over £35,000 worth of GPS receivers and screens was stolen from farm vehicles.

And finally, East Riding Youth Dance returns after the Easter break and is looking for new members. Regular weekly sessions are held at Beverley Memorial Hall on Tuesdays and are open to children aged 9 – 18.
