Beverley residents suffering vandalism and anti-social behaviour from groups of youths have got together to set up their own Neighbourhood Watch group. The new group covers the areas of Grovehill Road, Cherry Tree Lane, St Nicholas, Priory Road and Chantry Lane.

Stones have been thrown at windows and front doors and local parkland has been vandalised. At least 30 households have already signed up to a WhatsApp group to share information and numbers are continuing to grow The residents have also registered as a formal Neighbourhood Watch Group with East Riding Council.

Beverley Cherry Tree Centre has been highly commended in the Community Group category of the Parliamentary “Kids Count” Inspiration Awards, having been nominated by local MP Graham Stuart. Jo Ramsay, manager at the centre, told Beverley FM: “It is testament to the dedication of the youth workers who have pounded the streets working with the hard to reach adolescents and the amazing team at the Cherry Tree Centre who support and champion them.” Representatives from the centre will attend the House of Commons later this month for the awards ceremony.

And finally, Beverley Racecourse has this season raised prize-money to £1.2 million ahead of the curtain-raising meeting on The Westwood tomorrow. Investment over the winter has also included a major revamp of the Premier Enclosure terrace, while planning permission has been submitted to rebuild the stable yard and ancillary buildings. The ambitious project – due to commence in September and be completed the following spring – will cost in excess of £1million.
