Beverley’s vibrant dining out scene will be boosted next year with the opening of acclaimed Indian street food restaurant Mowgli. Former barrister Nisha Katona, who was awarded an MBE for her services to the food industry, opened her first restaurant in Liverpool in 2014 – there are now 14 around the country with more to come this year and next.

Alongside her role as the group’s executive head chef, Nisha is now the author of three cook books and regularly appears on TV and radio. She made her announcement of the expansion into Beverley via the Mowgli Facebook page at the weekend.

The new restaurant is set to take over the former Solita site across the road from the Beaver pub. She said on Facebook: “We will open there next year. We had posh friends in Beverley and I have such fond memories of staying there.”

A recent poll by the Alzheimer’s Society revealed that 68% of people in Yorkshire and Humber were against the scrapping of free lateral flow tests for care home visitors. More than 1,000 have written to Health Secretary Sajid Javid urging him to rethink the decision.

A society spokesman said: “The Government must recognise the disproportionate impact paying for tests will have and although it was announced a small number of care home visitors providing close personal care, will continue to get free tests, we feel this doesn’t go nearly far enough to allow everyone to visit safely.”

And finally, racing returns to The Westwood this week, with the first meeting of the season scheduled for Wednesday. Easter Raceday promises a full afternoon of racing plus children’s entertainment, including an Easter Egg decorating workshop and a mobile petting farm. Gates open at 11am with the first race at 1pm.
