Grants of up to £26,000 are being offered by East Riding College to those enrolling on teaching training courses at the Beverley and Bridlington campuses. They are available for those training in certain subjects, mostly science, technology, engineering and maths, where there is currently a shortage of trained teachers.

The bursaries, which range from £12,000 to £26,000 depending on the subject chosen, are tax free and do not need to be paid back. More information is available by visiting www.eastridingcollege.ac.uk/teach or by calling 0345 120 0044.

Humberside Police Force has announced plans to establish a Violence Reduction Unit following Government funding. Police and Crime Commissioner Jonathan Evison told Beverley FM the unit will identify the causes of violent crime and lead the local response to reducing violence through targeted interventions and education.

He said: “This announcement marks the start of what will become a long-term project to tackle and prevent violent crime. The Humber region does not experience the levels of serious violence seen elsewhere, such as knife or gun crime, but we do have violence disproportionately affecting women and girls.”

It’s being held at Toll Gavel Church in Beverley on Saturday April 16, from 10am to 4pm. All proceeds will go to the Jacob’s Well Appeal. More information is available by emailing organiser Lynn Wilson. The address is lynnwilson@lynnwilson.karoo.co.uk
