In what was Beverley Town Council’s first official event since before the start of the pandemic, Mayor Cllr Linda Johnson hosted a civic dinner with a difference. Instead of a formal three-course meal with table service, Cllr Johnson invited East Riding’s Great and The Good to choose from street food dishes.

The dinner was held at East Riding College’s Flemingate campus and was attended by the Lord-Lieutenant of the East Riding, James Dick, the High Sheriff, Richard Shepherdson, and Mayors from across the county. Also present were members of Beverley Town Council, Honorary Beverley Freemen and Freewomen, personal guests of the Mayor and representatives of two charities she has supported over the past year – SCOPE and HER Breast Friends.

The evening was catered by college students, who also provided music and later invited guests to tour the college and see their work. Cllr Johnson told Beverley FM: “Traditionally, civic dinners are very formal affairs, but I wanted to host an event that was a bit different.” A raffle on the evening raised £456, to be divided equally between her two charities.

Beverley Barge Preservation Society is to host an open day on the Beck a week on Sunday, March 20. It’s a chance for the public to go on board the society’s vessels Syntan and the Sun and, if the weather’s good, to enjoy a boat trip on the Beck aboard the Mermaid, built more than 130 years ago.

And finally, the resignation of Cllr Paul Bakes leaves a vacancy on Leven Parish Council, which will be filled by co-option unless at least 10 residents demand an election by Thursday March 24.
