Beverley MP Graham Stuart says there’s no easy solution to flooding from the River Hull affecting farmland in the area. He was speaking after chairing a meeting with the Environment Agency, East Riding Council and the National Farmers Union, Yorkshire Water, the Clerk of the Beverley and North Holderness Internal Drainage Board and the Chair of the Yorkshire Regional Flood Defence Committee.

The Environment Agency said a “hump” on the bed of the lower River Hull may have been present since the Ice Age and said dredging or de-silting would not make a difference. But they outlined proposals for a project that would instead selectively take out reeds in that area of the river.

Mr Stuart told Beverley FM: “There is no easy solution to put a stop to the flooding from the River Hull that farmers continue to experience,” but he said investigations were on-going. However, he added: “It is disappointing that there does not appear to be any suitable funding in the Government’s Levelling Up agenda for our purposes, but we will continue to investigate and pursue other avenues.”

Firemen were called out to deal with a blaze in a first-floor bedroom of a house in Robert Wood Avenue, Beverley. No-one was hurt and damage was confined to a mattress and electrical charger. Smoke alarms were fitted by officers before leaving.

And finally, Beverley photo-journalist Lee Karen Stow will be giving a talk at the Treasure House on Saturday afternoon to tie in with the current exhibition there, called “Hidden: Cold War Women”.
