BEVERLEY FM understands East Riding Council is currently in talks to make places available for people to go if they struggle to afford their energy bills this winter. The council has not yet announced any definite plans but it is understood officials are drawing up measures behind the scenes.

Council leader Jonathan Owen told a full East Riding meeting in July that libraries and other leisure centres could be potential venues for what have been dubbed “warm banks” elsewhere. It comes after East Riding councillors from the ruling Conservatives and opposition Liberal Democrats backed a motion declaring a Cost of Living Emergency in July.

MORE RETAILERS, from large supermarkets to small independents, continue to announce that they will not be open on Monday as a mark of respect on the day of the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Yesterday, Flemingate announced that all shops there will be closed to allow staff to pay their respects while East Riding Council said all council buildings, including Beverley Leisure Centre and Beverley Treasure House, will be closed for the day. East Yorkshire Buses say Monday’s buses will run to a Sunday service.

ALL THREE boats restored by the Beverley Barge Preservation Society will be open to the public on Beverley Beck on Sunday from 10.30am to 3pm as part of this year’s Heritage Festival.
