FR: Seahawks complete pre-season Cup

The final weekend of the Yorkshire Cup was always going to be a tough one given the level of absences suffered by the Seahawks.

However, the weekend of hockey started in remembrance of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, who very sadly passed away on Thursday afternoon after leading our country for over 70 years, may we thank her for all she has done for this country and now she can rest in peace.

Saturday’s defeat to Leeds Knights was not what Matty Davies envisaged from the lads and proved that the Knights are well very equipped to start the season off well. There were some positives to take from the 1-8 defeat and they were that youngsters Cam Hamill and Owen Bruton did not stop all night long with some big minutes under their belts, Curtis Warburton coming up with a big night considering the number of shots he faced and that Lee Pollitt scoring his first goal for the Seahawks.

Sunday’s trip to Sheffield was the final game of the Yorkshire Cup. On the back of a stinging defeat to Leeds, this was a much-improved Hull side. With injury absences mounting, it was disappointing that Bobby Streetly was withdrawn during the game, but it was a prudent pre-caution measure only. In defence, Hull acquitted themselves well against a potent Steeldogs offence with Jordan McLaughlin making some fine saves. On the night, it was a 4-2 win for the Steeldogs, but it was Hull’s proudest moment to date with academy players Alex Kent and Dec Jones lighting the lamp for the first time in their senior careers.

Following the game, Matty Davies commentated that there were many positives to the game after what happened last night and the application of his academy players was a pleasure to watch giving him some real selection headaches when bodies start to return to the line-up.
