CROWDS gathered at the Market Cross in Beverley yesterday to hear the official proclamation, marking the accession of King Charles III to the throne. It was read by the High Sheriff of the East Riding of Yorkshire, Mrs Jacky Bowes, in the presence of the Lord-Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire, Jim Dick, the Chairman of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Cllr Jonathan Owen, and the Mayor of Beverley, Cllr Linda Johnson. 

A procession left Beverley Guildhall, making its way through Toll Gavel to the Market Cross where the proclamation was made, followed by prayers and the National Anthem before three cheers rang out for King Charles III.  

FLORAL TRIBUTES: East Riding Council has announced that floral tributes to the Queen can be left in a number of locations. These include: Hengate Memorial Gardens and Coronation Gardens in Beverley.

Books of condolence will also be available from Monday at the council’s libraries, multi-service centres and customer service centres.

In her official statement, the Mayor of Beverley, Cllr Linda Johnson. said: “I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. On behalf of all Beverley residents, I send heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family. They are in our thoughts and prayers at this very sad time.  Not only was she our Monarch, but she was also a much-loved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

“We all share a deep sense of loss as we remember Her Majesty with great love and affection.  She dedicated her life to public service for more than 70 remarkable years and has set an unparalleled example to us all.  It is she who has been the one constancy in an ever-changing world – we will not see her like again.

“At this time of reflection, let us give thanks for her life and the many ways in which she enriched our nation, The Commonwealth and the world.”
