BEVERLEY MP Graham Stuart has been appointed Minister for Climate at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy by new Prime Minister Liz Truss. In his new role, Mr Stuart will attend Cabinet meetings.

Mr Stuart, who was among MPs backing Ms Truss in the Conservative Leadership elections, was previously Minister for Europe responsible for strengthening relationships between the UK and other European countries in a range of areas, including investment and security.

He told Beverley FM: “It is vital that under this climate-friendly Conservative Government the United Kingdom continues to drive forward progress in combating the chronic danger of climate change and I look forward to working with my colleagues in the department and around the world to champion this important issue.”

TAXI FARES locally look likely to rise by up to 16.5 per cent, after East Riding Council’s Cabinet backed the proposals. It will be the first increase in eight years if ratified at a meeting of the full council. More regular reviews of prices that can be charged by Hackney Carriage drivers will also be carried out in the wake of increases in the the cost of living.

The proposed fares would see a typical four-mile journey rise from the current £8.15 during the day to £9.25 and from £10.30 at night to £11.95.

THE ZOO at Sewerby Hall and Gardens has been temporarily closed, as it is within the 3km protection zone set up following the latest case of avian flu confirmed in the area.
