Hull City lost their first home league match of the season with a 2-0 defeat against high-flying Sheffield United. Goals in each half from Oli McBurnie and Sander Berge saw the Blades go top of the EFL Championship table.

Shota Arveladze made three changes to his starting XI to the one that faced QPR in midweek. Lewie Coyle returned from injury to captain the side, replacing Cyrus Christie at right-wing back, while Ozan Tufan and Ryan Woods came in for Ryan Longman and Andy Cannon. New signing Dimitrios Pelkas was named on the substitutes bench alongside the returning Jean Michaël Seri.

Berge had the first opportunity of the game from range, but his low-drilled strike went wide of the post. Tommy Doyle then shaped up to shoot from a equally long distance, but the curling shot was held by Matt Ingram.

The visitors had the majority of chances and opened the scoring on 20 minutes. McBurnie cut inside from the left wing and fired his effort past Ingram at his near post. Berge almost found a second moments later as he rounded the onrushing Ingram, but his cross-shot was cleared away by Coyle.

The Tigers then had a glorious chance to equalise on 26 minutes. After the Blades’ failed a short corner routine, Óscar Estupiñán raced through on goal, sprinting almost the full length of the pitch. However, the striker’s one-on-one was brilliantly saved by Wes Foderingham before the rebound from the Columbian was saved again by Foderingham, with the aid of defender Max Lowe.

At the other end, Anel Ahmedhodžić looked to place his strike into the far corner, but the defender’s attempt went wide of the target. Tufan thought he had got the Tigers level in first-half injury time as he was played through by Estupiñán, but his lobbed effort went over the bar.
