THE RISE in the cost of living is having a significant impact on local people, East Riding councillors were told, with the number of households in relative poverty rising by 14 per cent, based on the latest figures available. Council leader Cllr Jonathan Owen told a full meeting of the authority that council officers were trying to get support to the most vulnerable, including with financial advice and aid.

Councillors also heard the number of households in Council Tax arrears had risen by 627 from March to April, with those in rent arrears to the authority falling slightly. Cllr Owen said 107,000 East Riding households, 73.4 per cent of the 127,000 eligible, had been paid the £150 energy rebate since its April roll out.

MORE THAN 30 staff working in the Beverley office of Wilkin Chapman are to receive a £1,000 bonus to help them deal with the cost of living crisis. In total, the law firm is giving the cash to more than. 350 staff working in their offices in Grimsby, Louth, Lincoln and Beverley.

Chief executive Robin Simmonds said: “This payment reflects our concern for the challenges being faced by everyone in our business. Although this will not mitigate the national economic climate, we hope it will go some way towards helping our Wilkin Chapman family in the months ahead.”

THERE was a good turn-out for yesterday’s Armed Forces Day parade and displays in Beverley. Photographs from the event can be viewed on the Beverley FM Facebook page.
