THE OPPOSITION Liberal Democrats have captured another seat from the ruling Conservative party on East Riding Council following a by-election in Bridlington. Jayne Phoenix won in Bridlington North with 57.1 per cent of the vote – the election taking place following the death of previous Conservative councillor Chad Chadwick.

She polled 1,950 votes compared to 1,077 for Conservative Jonathan Bibb and the victory means the Lib-Dems now have 12 seats on the council, having made another gain from the Conservatives in South Hunsley earlier this year. The Conservatives are still by far the biggest party on ERYC with 43 seats

Labour’s David Butland came third in Bridlington with 171 votes, followed by Carlo Verda of the Social Democratic Party with 125 and the Yorkshire Party’s Kimberley Thomas, 93.

MOLESCROFT Primary School has been been awarded an Eco-Schools Green Flag as a result of its eco action plan, including creating a Bluebell Wood and planting bulbs in a local park to weeding a wild-flower meadow and growing vegetables for the school canteen.

A STAGGERING 455 seatbelt offences were recorded by Humberside Police in a two-week period as part of a nationwide campaign. The roadside checks also led to the discovery of further offences, such as driving whilst disqualified, driving without a licence or insurance, and driving without an MOT.

Sgt Marc Chance, of the Roads Policing Unit, told us: “The lack of seatbelt use continues to be a contributory factor in a number of recent fatalities on our region’s roads.”
